Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has shared new details about how the company decides which games to develop, revealing that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie directly influenced the creation of Nintendo’s latest Star Fox and Yoshi titles. The comments came during a recent interview with Famitsu, offering fans a rare look at how Nintendo aligns its game development with other entertainment projects.
While Nintendo has increasingly expanded into movies, theme parks, and other media, Miyamoto explained that these initiatives are no longer separate from the company’s gaming strategy. Instead, ideas often move between films and games, helping shape both projects during development.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie helped shape Nintendo’s software lineup
When asked how Nintendo selects which games to release, Miyamoto clarified that there is no fixed formula. However, he revealed that discussions surrounding The Super Mario Galaxy Movie played an important role in greenlighting both a new Star Fox remake and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
Speaking to Famitsu, Miyamoto said:
“We did discuss that ‘we have an idea to include Fox in the script for the movie, so we definitely want a new Star Fox game.'”
He added that the process works both ways, with games and films influencing one another throughout production. Miyamoto explained that Nintendo began developing The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Princess Peach: Showtime! around the same time, leading the teams to coordinate how Princess Peach would be portrayed across both projects.
A similar approach was taken for Yoshi. Since Nintendo had already decided the character would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the company moved forward with a brand-new game starring the fan-favorite dinosaur.
“It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that’s how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began,”
Miyamoto explained.
He concluded by saying Nintendo intends to
“continue to maintain a good relationship between games and other developments,”
suggesting the company’s multimedia strategy will remain an important part of future planning.
Miyamoto remains involved despite shifting priorities
Although Miyamoto no longer leads major game projects as he once did, he continues influencing Nintendo’s long-term creative direction. In the same Famitsu interview, he acknowledged that his attention has largely shifted toward movies, Super Nintendo World, and other entertainment initiatives.
However, he also admitted he has not completely ruled out returning to game development if the right opportunity arises.
“Depending on the theme, if I can do something interesting with it, there might come a time when I want to do it. I have the know-how,”
Miyamoto said.
Those comments highlight Miyamoto’s evolving role within Nintendo. Rather than overseeing individual game development, he now helps connect the company’s games, films, and other projects into a broader entertainment strategy.
His latest remarks suggest Nintendo’s future lineup may increasingly be shaped by cross-media planning, with movies and games developing side by side instead of independently.
