Nintendo has officially announced a series of hardware revisions for the Nintendo Switch 2 and several accessories in Europe as it prepares for new European Union battery regulations set to take effect in February 2027.
The company confirmed that the upcoming revisions are designed to support user-replaceable batteries, while emphasizing that there are no functional differences between the current models and the revised versions.
According to Nintendo, the updated products will begin rolling out on a staggered schedule starting in summer 2026, with additional devices launching through autumn, winter, and early 2027. Availability will vary by country depending on manufacturing and distribution.
Switch 2 revisions focus on repairability, not new features
Nintendo explained that the revisions are solely intended to comply with Europe’s upcoming battery legislation, which requires portable electronic devices to feature batteries that consumers can replace more easily.
The company stated:
“There is no difference in functionality between current products and revised products containing user-replaceable batteries.”
Existing Nintendo Switch 2 owners do not need to replace their hardware, as the revisions do not introduce new features or performance improvements.
The revised Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to arrive in autumn 2026. While the console’s battery capacity will decrease slightly from 5,220mAh to 5,172mAh—roughly a 1% reduction—Nintendo says the included Joy-Con 2 controllers will also feature user-replaceable batteries.
The updated console will weigh approximately 411 grams, about 10 grams heavier than the current model. With Joy-Con 2 controllers attached, the total weight will increase to around 548 grams.
Several controllers will also receive updated designs

Alongside the console revision, Nintendo confirmed updated versions of multiple accessories.
Revised Joy-Con 2 controllers are scheduled for winter 2026, with battery capacity remaining unchanged despite a slight increase in weight.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will also receive a revision during winter. Its battery capacity will decrease from 1,070mAh to 897mAh, while its weight drops from approximately 235 grams to 228 grams.
Looking ahead to early 2027, Nintendo plans to introduce updated versions of its Nintendo 64 Controller and Nintendo GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch Online. The GameCube controller will receive a modest battery increase from 500mAh to 525mAh, while the Nintendo 64 controller’s battery capacity remains unchanged.
Battery replacement kits will also be sold
To support the transition, Nintendo confirmed that official battery replacement kits for each revised product will be available through the Nintendo Store in Europe.
The revised hardware will be released across numerous European markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, along with several additional countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Nintendo noted that rollout dates may differ between regions, and retailer availability may vary.
The announcement aligns Nintendo’s hardware with upcoming European repairability standards while maintaining the same gaming experience for Switch 2 owners.
