SEGA has officially released Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, putting an end to months of leaks and speculation. The upgraded version of the open-zone Sonic title is available immediately, offering improved visuals, smoother gameplay, and all previously released content in one package.

The launch comes at a time when entertainment headlines are also being dominated by streaming hits like I Will Find You, signaling a busy week across both gaming and streaming industries.

A Complete Sonic Frontiers Experience on New Hardware

With the Definitive Edition, SEGA is positioning Sonic Frontiers as a must-play title for early adopters of the Nintendo Switch 2. The game builds upon its original release by bundling every major update and expansion, including The Final Horizon story campaign and additional content packs such as Sights, Sounds, and Speed.

Players once again follow Sonic as he explores the mysterious Starfall Islands in search of the Chaos Emeralds. The game’s open-zone structure, which blends exploration with high-speed traversal and combat, remains intact but now benefits from enhanced hardware capabilities.

According to the official overview, the experience focuses on “exploring vast open zones, battling powerful enemies, and uncovering the secrets of the islands while rescuing Sonic’s friends.” This core gameplay loop is now supported by faster loading times and improved responsiveness.

One of the key upgrades in this new version is the addition of dual graphical modes, allowing players to choose between performance and resolution settings. The performance mode prioritizes smoother gameplay, targeting higher frame rates—reportedly around 60 FPS—while the resolution mode enhances visual fidelity at the cost of frame rate.

These options reflect a broader trend in modern console gaming, where players expect flexibility depending on their preferences. The Switch 2’s improved hardware enables Sonic Frontiers to deliver a more polished experience compared to its original Switch release.

Save Transfers and Content Limitations

SEGA has also confirmed that players can transfer their save data from the original Nintendo Switch version to the Switch 2 edition. This ensures returning players can continue their progress without starting over. However, the transfer is one-way, meaning progress cannot be moved back to the older system.

There are also a few limitations tied to specific downloadable content, particularly collaboration items that will not carry over. While this affects a small portion of players, the majority of core content remains fully accessible in the Definitive Edition.

One notable point of discussion surrounding the release is the absence of an upgrade path for existing owners. Players who previously purchased Sonic Frontiers on Switch will need to buy the new version separately, priced at around $50.

This decision has sparked debate within the gaming community, especially as other publishers have offered discounted upgrades for next-gen versions. While SEGA has not provided a detailed explanation, the inclusion of all DLC and technical improvements appears to be part of the justification for the standalone release.
