New technical details for Shenmue 3 Enhanced on Nintendo Switch 2 have surfaced, offering a clearer look at how the classic franchise will perform on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware. While the game is still in development, publisher ININ Games has shared early targets for resolution and frame rate, giving fans a sense of what to expect from the upgraded version.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, the developer confirmed that the team is aiming for a 1080p resolution and a stable frame rate around 60 frames per second. Although these targets are not final, they currently represent what the studio considers the most realistic balance between performance and visual quality.

Performance Targets Point to Stable Experience

According to ININ Games, achieving 1080p resolution on the Switch 2 is “the most reasonable target so far,” suggesting that the team is prioritizing consistency over pushing for higher resolutions. This approach aligns with the expectations for many modern console titles, where stable performance often takes precedence over raw graphical output.

Frame rate has been another key focus during development. While the team explored the possibility of pushing performance beyond 60 frames per second, they acknowledged that doing so may not be practical.

“We could do a variable of 60–120,”

the developer explained,

“but right now trying to push so that we would have 60 fps, and it’s not looking like it will be possible to push much above this, so I think 60 locked would be more reasonable.”

This statement indicates that players can likely expect a smooth and consistent gameplay experience rather than fluctuating performance levels.

Why 60 FPS Matters for Shenmue

For a game like Shenmue 3, maintaining a steady frame rate is particularly important. The series is known for its immersive environments and detailed interactions, where smooth performance can significantly enhance the experience. A locked 60 FPS ensures that movement, combat, and exploration feel responsive, especially on newer hardware like the Switch 2.

By focusing on stability, ININ Games appears to be addressing one of the key criticisms of earlier versions of the game, which did not always deliver consistent performance across platforms.

Enhanced Edition Brings Gameplay Improvements

Beyond technical upgrades, Shenmue 3 Enhanced will introduce several gameplay improvements designed to make the experience more accessible and enjoyable. These updates include adjustments to the stamina system, allowing players to manage their character’s energy more effectively during exploration.

Additional changes include health restoration before combat encounters, which reduces frustration during challenging sequences. The game will also feature reduced money barriers, making progression smoother and less restrictive for players.

Quality-of-life improvements extend to cutscenes and interactions as well. Players will be able to skip conversations and cinematic sequences, while an expanded quick-time event (QTE) timing window will make certain challenges less punishing.

Together, these updates aim to modernize the gameplay while preserving the core identity of the original experience.

Development Still Ongoing

Despite the promising details, ININ Games has emphasized that development is still ongoing and that performance targets could change before release. The current figures represent early goals rather than finalized specifications, meaning adjustments are still possible as the game moves closer to launch.

The developer also noted that the game’s resolution is already set to 1080p in its current build, suggesting that this aspect is unlikely to change significantly. Frame rate optimization, however, may continue to evolve as the team refines performance.
