Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is heading to the Nintendo Switch 2, giving fans another chance to revisit one of the most iconic RPG duos in gaming history. The announcement comes just ahead of a Nintendo Direct, with the collection scheduled to launch on July 23, 2026.

The release continues Square Enix’s strategy of bringing classic Final Fantasy titles to modern platforms, ensuring both longtime fans and new players can experience these stories with updated visuals and gameplay enhancements.

A Classic RPG Returns on New Hardware

Final Fantasy X and its sequel Final Fantasy X-2 are widely regarded as some of the most memorable entries in the franchise. The original game follows Tidus, a blitzball player who becomes entangled in a journey to save the world of Spira alongside the summoner Yuna. Its sequel picks up two years later, shifting focus to Yuna as she searches for answers tied to a mysterious vision.

In a statement shared alongside the announcement, Square Enix described the release as a way to bring these “timeless classics forward to the current generation of fans, old and new alike.” The collection offers over 100 hours of combined gameplay, making it one of the more content-rich releases expected for the new console.

What’s New in the Switch 2 Version

While the core experience remains faithful to the original games, the Nintendo Switch 2 version introduces several improvements designed to enhance accessibility and performance. The most noticeable upgrade comes in the form of higher resolution visuals, with character models, environments, and monsters receiving further refinements.

Players can also expect quality-of-life features that were added in previous remastered versions. These include a high-speed mode that allows faster gameplay progression and an option to disable random encounters, making exploration less disruptive. The remaster also includes arranged music tracks and additional content from the International versions of both games.

Despite these updates, Square Enix has confirmed that there is no upgrade path for players who already own the collection on the original Nintendo Switch. This means returning players will need to purchase the game again if they want to experience it on the new hardware.

Even though Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has been available on multiple platforms over the years, its arrival on the Nintendo Switch 2 remains significant. The console’s improved performance could offer a smoother and more visually polished experience, especially for players who prefer handheld gaming.

The timing of the announcement also plays an important role. With a new generation of hardware on the horizon, familiar titles like this help build a strong launch window while providing reliable content that appeals to a broad audience. For Square Enix, it reinforces the long-term value of its legacy catalog.

For collectors, there is some mixed news. A physical version of the game is planned in Japan, but it will not be a traditional cartridge release. Instead, it will come as a game-key card, requiring players to download the full game. Details for physical releases in other regions have not yet been confirmed.

The digital version, however, will be widely available when the game launches on July 23, ensuring that players worldwide can access the title without delay.
