Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knight

Long remained in early access, Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights finally shows itself in its final form, fully confirming all the excellent expectations that had settled over time. It remains difficult to assert that the metroidvania of Live Wire and Adglobe represents a breath of innovation within the genre, because the desire to adhere to the most classic canons is clear from the beginning and remains so until the end of the adventure.

Yet Ender Lilies brings with it something special, a sense of uniqueness that we had admired in works such as Hollow Knight or the most successful Igavania of the last period. Moreover, the Ender Lilies is convincing even the way in which the story intersects with the needs of gameplay , creating a project that makes the most of the most important representatives without drawing out verbatim the salient features.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights  tells of an ancient kingdom called Finis ravaged by the so-called necropioggia, an event of an unknown nature that literally transformed the inhabitants into monstrosities in the throes of madness. The curse lasted so long that it spared no one, with the poor people who could not rebel in any way, nor took advantage of the short time available to find a countermeasure capable of countering the tragedy that reduced that place in ruin.

Is there a way to heal the inhabitants of the impurity that has transformed them? Is it possible to go back to its former glory, putting this ugly business behind it all? As these questions flood the player’s mind, we discover a little girl awakening in an ancient church. He has no memory of his past deeds, nor has he any idea of the power he brings with him. She is defenseless, pure, with almost diaphanous skin and clothing, and is perhaps the last vestal left ; the last hope for a kingdom that has lost all joy and awareness.

In this path of re-appropriation of her memories she will be accompanied by the entity of a knight who will offer her his blade to defend himself, while battle after battle, and boss after boss, he will be able to rediscover his past. In a captivating and clever way, Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights explains to the player what really happened in the kingdom of Finis, mixing the typical cryptic narrative of modern metroidvania with some excerpts of text files that leave all the clues necessary to reconstruct, piece by piece, a story that turns out to be exciting even despite the extended times of exploration.

On the other hand, advancing in Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights also means having to undergo a bit of backtracking related to both leveling and the need to return to some areas that you will only have access to at a later time. Just like in the most prominent titles of the genre, Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights offers a substantial map made up of areas represented by interconnected segments, with some of them that can only be crossed when you acquire the skills suitable to be able to reach previously closed areas.

Here, then, that the protagonist will first be able to perform a double jump, then use a powerful hammer to break through soft parts of the ground, glide for short distances and get hold of skills that modify both her mobility in combat and her ability to move. freely without restrictions.

You can also do it through the rapid journey, which can be selected from the benches or from other rest points suitably marked on the map. Map that is also very clear in showing the player the areas explored, those where something is still missing to collect, the intersection points and those of entry not yet exploited.

Always near the free zones where you can save the game and automatically restore health and healing charges, you can both select the relics that guarantee the protagonist some very useful passive skills (but watch out for the maximum number of availabilities, which can be increased by finding secrets ), both enhance the skills you will acquire. You will have two slots of three attacks each that you can alternate at any time , but as it is easy to imagine the skills will be many more than you can use and you will need to make a selection between the most useful and effective, even according to different situations game that will arise.

If, for example, in the first few bars of Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights you will use the sword and some short-range attacks much more, as you advance you will opt more for hammers and for all those skills capable of being able to hit enemies while remaining at proper distance. Not only that: there are bosses and optional mobs that are easier to take down if you make a careful selection of offense tools, mitigating the objective difficulties that some clashes can present in the more advanced stages.

You will soon realize that some of these bindings have very similar characteristics, which is why it would have been preferable to have less skills and a more careful design that enhances their diversity. At the same time, there are some that you will rarely use, especially because the best ones have an evident and greater effectiveness: in this way, since they are in fact more useful for your purpose, you will channel the enhancements on the latter and you will gradually abandon all the others.

However, it must be said that the shoulder attacks, unlike the main ones, are not infinite, therefore it will be necessary to know how to manage and progress along scenarios that sometimes present peaks of difficulty not always managed in the best way. Nothing serious, but an additional post-launch balance should be done in our opinion. The combat system also provides that with the main weapons you can perform one or two shots in a row, both on the ground and in mid-air; all this, while you will use dodges that make the protagonist dive far away.

During the adventure, using the same button without moving or selecting a direction, it will also be possible to perform a sort of parry, especially useful against bullets that can be returned to the sender . In general, the intelligent use of skills is vital to defeat enemies that are always well characterized and with diversified movesets, which guarantee a good variety of approaches.

Of course, in addition to leveling up, you can increase the healing ability and find more impurities to upgrade the equipment, but the developers have seen fit to reward especially those who deviate from the main road and look for optional areas.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a really great metroidvania , which knows exactly how to lean on a classic base while remaining unique and particular. This is also evident from the very inspired artistic sector, which behind a fairytale aspect enriched by sweet and delicate music hides a story of cruelty, decadence and profound humanity.

It does not often happen to remain intrigued for a long time, in a genre that often presents objective shortcomings in the narrative sector. Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights manages to fill this gap and presents itself, incredibly, as one of the most successful independent titles of the last period , behind only great works like Hollow Knight and very few others that can be cash on the fingers of one hand.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a surprising game that confirms all the potential already expressed during the early access phase. Exciting, with a well-managed progress system and a convincing game map construction, the work of Live Wire and Adglobe succeeds in the feat of soaring gracefully in the midst of a sea of soulless clones, guaranteeing satisfaction to the most fans. loyal to metroidavania.
