DELTARUNE has officially received its long-awaited Chapter 5 update, bringing the next installment of Toby Fox’s acclaimed RPG to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 players as a free download. The latest chapter was first announced during the June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct before launching today, continuing the story of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei while introducing entirely new gameplay ideas.

Alongside the release, Nintendo published a message from series creator Toby Fox, who offered fans an early look at what makes Chapter 5 different from previous entries. The developer described the update as one that combines familiar emotions with fresh experiences, while also revealing new concept art and teasing the setting players will explore throughout the adventure.

Toby Fox promises a balance of nostalgia, humor, and new gameplay

In comments shared through Nintendo Japan, Toby Fox explained that Chapter 5 was designed to feel both familiar and surprising. Rather than relying solely on the series’ established formula, the latest installment introduces mechanics that players have not encountered before.

Fox said:

“This chapter is a mix of ‘nostalgia’ and ‘freshness,’ with some funny moments, some serious moments, and a whole new level of gameplay you’ve never seen before… I hope everything is in just the right balance for you all. I hope you enjoy it!”

According to Fox, Chapter 5 begins with the long-awaited festival that has been referenced throughout the game before taking players into another Dark World. This new location revolves around blooming plants while continuing DELTARUNE’s blend of emotional storytelling, memorable character interactions, and strategic RPG combat.

The developer also added a humorous note aimed at Japanese fans, joking that he wrote his message using “the soles of my feet wearing geta sandals,” a lighthearted comment that reflects the quirky humor found throughout both UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE.

Beyond its story developments, Chapter 5 introduces a Dark World influenced by Eastern-inspired architecture and scenery. Toby Fox noted that players may notice elements such as sloping rooftops and torii gates while exploring the new setting, giving this chapter a distinct visual identity compared to previous Dark Worlds.

To celebrate the release, Nintendo also published several pieces of official concept art. The artwork includes sketches of Susie as Toby Fox jokingly considers outfits for one of her dates, Bagapan preparing to meet his mysterious girlfriend, and an illustration by Temmie teasing more action-filled chapters in the future.

These illustrations provide a behind-the-scenes look into the creative process while reinforcing the playful personality that has become synonymous with the series.

Chapter 5 continues DELTARUNE’s expanding story

DELTARUNE is Toby Fox’s follow-up to UNDERTALE, taking place in an alternate world with an entirely original narrative. Players continue to control Kris while exploring mysterious Dark Worlds, meeting new allies, and deciding whether to fight enemies or resolve encounters peacefully.

Chapter 5 builds on the mysteries established in earlier chapters while introducing fresh gameplay systems intended to surprise returning players. Nintendo has also confirmed that additional updates and patches are planned following the release, showing that support for the game will continue as development moves toward future chapters.

With the newest chapter now available, players can experience another major step in DELTARUNE’s ongoing story while discovering the blend of nostalgia, innovation, humor, and emotional storytelling that Toby Fox says defines Chapter 5.
